  CLASSICAL’S  BERKSON,
HOPE’S CHEATHAM TAKE
INDIVIDUAL MEET HONORS
AT R.I. CLASSIC INVITATIONAL

29 Dec. - - Rhode Island emerged with a pair of individual champions - as well as numerous relay titlists - at yesterday’s R.I. Classic Track & Field Invitational, held at the PCTA facility.
In the girls’ long jump competition, Classical sophomore Maddy Berkson out-dueled Hope High senior Royal Cheatham to win by an inch. Berkson and Cheatham went back and forth in this one, with the Classical star finally getting off a leap of 18 feet, 11.75 inches (5.87 meters), equaling a meet record. “My form wasn’t great,’’ Berkson said. “I wasn’t high enough on that last jump.’’
Cheatham finished off at 18-10.75 (5.75). “I was hoping for 19 [feet],’’ said Cheatham, the defending indoor long jump, 55- and 300-meter champion. “I felt good; positive, confident.’’
Earlier in the day, Cheatham, a senior, smoked a regional field in the 55-meter dash, clocking 7.21 seconds to victory. She also anchored the Blue Wave’s win in the 4x200 relay; a meet-record 1:44.49. In addition, Hope’s “Super Kid’’ was named the girls’ meet track MVP.
Over at the high jump relay, La Salle senior Dakota Dailey-Harris eliminated her own state indoor mark in that event. On her final attempt of the series, Dailey-Harris cleared the bar at 5 feet, 8 inches (1.73 meters), bettering by an inch her R.I.-record performance of a year ago at the State Championships. She narrowly missed clearing 5-10 (1.78). “I’m shooting for 5-11,’’ she said. (Dailey-Harris also owns the state outdoor high jump standard).
                                                      The Fabled Mile
The centerpiece of the R.I. Classic meet is the mile run, an event that challenges local runners who do not often get a chance at the imperial distance. In the girls’ mile yesterday, South Kingstown’s Paige Ethier was the first Rhode Islander over the line. She clocked 5:08.99 in a race that was handily won by Sarah Gillespie, of Northwest Catholic in Connecticut, in 4:59.06. La Salle’s Molly Keating finished fifth (5:10.14). Gillespie went through the half-mile in 2:25, and held a 40-meter lead at the bell.
The boys’ mile featured the Brothers Kilcoyne, of Chariho High. Senior Dan Kilcoyne crossed the line in fourth place in 4:33.12, while Jake placed fifth (4:34.90). And, again, a runner from Northwest Catholic took the gold: Brian Poirier clocked 4:26.26.
                                           Velez heaves a record throw
The Classical senior, who won the state indoor title in the 25-pound weight throw last Febuary, was part of yesterday’s weight throw relay for his school. His contribution to a winning overall team measurement of 190-feet, 8-inches (58.12 meters) also yielded a field house and Classical High record. Velez’ tossed the ball 76 feet, 11.75 inches (23.46 meters).
                                                  Notables, Notables
While the boys had no individual champions yesterday, they did pick up a couple of relay gold medals. Hendricken took the distance medley relay in 10:56.44. The Hawk foursome of Tyler Henesler, Cam Ricci, Mark Vuono and anchor leg Mike Potter did the honors . . . North Kingstown’s 4x800 relay claimed the top prize, as Montee Cawley, Mike Coleman, Zach Emrich and Ben Stewart clocked 8:22.31, to Hendricken’s second-place 8:29.04 . . . Cumebrland’s top “long ranger’’ - junior Trevor Crawley - placed second in the boys’ 3000 meters. He looked good in finishing second in 9:09.17, a race won by Cole Conte, of Port Jefferson, N.Y. in 9:05.47 . . . The La Salle girls captured two relays. In the 4x800, the Rams clocked 9:45.65. Keating‘s 2:20 lead-off split helped power teammates Emily Papazian, Alicia De Castro and Caitlin Marino for the win . . . La Salle was also victorious in the freshman/sophomore sprint medley. Amanda Joyal, Mia Sardells, Stephanie DiTraglia and De Castro clocked a meet-record 4:29.01.
In the boys’ pole vault, Portsmouth High senior Nick Tyler finished fourth with a height of 12 feet, 6 inches (3.81 meters) . . . It was La Salle’s Jake Grundy finishing second in the boys’ freshman mile (4:57.99) . . . Chariho senior Bryce Kelly went through the 800-meter finish in third place (2:00.98) . . . Jarell James, a Hope senior, was second in the 300; his time was 36.41, in a race won by Steve Gayle, of New York, in 36.07.
OVAL NOTES: At the Boston Holiday Classic, held on Dec. 27 at the Reggie Lewis track in Roxbury, Hope’s Royal Cheatham won the 300 meters in 40.44 seconds, 21 1/100th of a second off the Rhode Island indoor record of 40.23 . . . Also at Reggie Lewis, Cheatham anchored Hope’s winning 4x200 (1:44.90) . . . The first RIT&FF Coaches Poll will be released on Jan. 12.
