Boys Basketball Playoffs: Classical upsets defending champs

There are still several big games left to be played in the Credit Unions of R.I. Boys Basketball Champions, but one thing is already certain: A new state will be crowned this year. Classical made sure of that Thursday night as Ismael Batista and Kalean Ives netted 28 of their combined 47 points in the second half in leading the Purple to a 69-61 come-from-behind upset of defending state champion St. Raphael in semifinal action of the East Regional bracket of the state tournament at Bryant University. Classical will play Central in the East Regional final Sunday at 7:30 p.m. Providence College's Alumni Hall. Each team made a big run in the first half. Classical made the first run to lead 19-11 but St. Ray's followed with an 11-0 run of its own to retake the lead. Back-to-back baskets by Charles Correa, the seconds one a 3-pointer, put the Saints up, 27-21, with 2:07 to play in the half. The see-saw match continued as Classical regained the leas on a trey and a layup by Kalean Ives, followed by a layup by Batista. St. Raphael grabbed it back before halftime on a put back by Correa and a field goal by Kaseem Sams in the last 36 seconds. The Saints held onto the lead for a short time in the second half, 35-30 on a basket made by Cesar Mejia at 13:53. But Classical capitalized on several trips to the foul line and jumped back on top with two free throws by Batista at 11:21. This time, the Purple kept its momentum. In addition to the big scoring contributions from Batista and Ives, Kwami Moreno netted 10 of his 12 down the stretch, to help hold off the determined Saints, who were led by Correa's 28-points, including six 3-pointers.
