    12 Oct. - - Classical senior distance man Joe Murphy has been having a good cross country season. He clocked a P-R 16:13 at the league-opening injury Fund race, and is keeping on pace to have a successful State Meet next month. On Monday at the City of Providence annual Columbus Day cross country races at Roger Williams Park, Murphy kept in the right direction by winning the Varsity 3-miler in 17:11. He was 20 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Tim Chambers (17:32.)  “I’m working toward my goal of going under 16 [minutes],’’ said Murphy, who placed 16^th last year at the State Championship, good for a coaches third-team all-state berth.

     In the girls’ Varsity event, Cranston East sophomore Shayna Cousineau went 21:05 to finish ahead of a 39-runner field.
