Purple, Rams end up first-ever indoor co-champions;
Hope sophomore Mc Intosh breaks one SR, ties another;
Classical’s Maddy Berkson mines triple gold

Feb. 16 - - As is so often in championship meets, the team prize comes down to the final event: the 4x400-meter relay. Saturday at the 2013 State Indoor Championship at the PCTA track, that event was the deciding factor in the girls’ portion of the meet.
And it came with a twist: the Purple were leading the Ram by two points, 81-79. But La Salle’s 4x400 of Amanda Joyal, Veronica Hardy, Eliza Rego and Erin Kane put together a winning time, a facility-record 4:02.77. Classical’s relay fousome (Oluwadara Falaye, Alicia Holloway, Elizabeth Akindolie and anchor Marry Berkson) placed second in 4:04.62. The result? A two-way tie for the title, the first time for such a phenomenon in the 24-year history of the indoor girls’ track league.
And for the Classical girls’ indoor program, a first. Both squads came away satisfied.
“It was great,’’ said La Salle’s head coach, Dave Wright, whose teams won the previous six state indoor titles. “They did everything we wanted them to. They performed well; many had P-Rs. Classical is a phenomenal team. Both teams put it all out on the track.’’

“A lot of kids stepped up,’’ added assistant Ram coach Kelly Martin.
“Awesome!’’ said Classical girls’ head coach Mike Greene of his team’s showing. “We are state champions. The girls are dedicated athletes.’’

On the boys’ side of the leger, it was Hendricken winning its 26th overall state indoor title, 75-65, over Classical. The two clubs were tight, with the Purple winning the 4x400, as Rob Raposa, Derek Jackson, Aljenis Candelier and Abdul-lateff Orulebaja clocked 3:34.32 for the win. But the Hawks picked up 10 points in the long jump, as sophomore Lee Moses sailed 22 feet, 2.25 inches (6.76 meters) for the gold.

GIRLS: Three golds for Berkson; state record for Mc Intosh
It was a hectic day indeed for Maddy Berkson, but the Classical junior “do-all kid’’ came through with three victories and 30 points for her team. These were not knock-off events, either, but the 1000, 1500 and 3000 meters.

Berkson began her day with the 3000, in which she battled Westerly’s talented junior distance ace Jackie Burr. The Bulldog runner grabbed the early lead, but with seven laps to go, Berkson closed the gap.Three laps later, the Classical star took control and never looked back. Berkson, who holds the state record in the event (9:53.34) hit the tape in 10:21.42. Burr came in at 10:27.76.

“I wated to get the points,’’ Berkson said. “I wanted to pick up the pace.’’

“I went out a little fast,’’ said Burr. “When she passed me, I was huffin’ and puffin’.’’
Berkson made it win No. 2 with her meet-record time of 4:36.23 in the 1500. Once again, the Classical runner had good competition; this time from La Salle’s Sheridan Wilbur (2nd in 4:37.48), and freshman Eliza Rego (3rd in 4:41.80). Berkson’s final gold came in the 1000 meters, which she took in 2:58.84.

Quashira runs, mentor watches
Hope High sophomore Quashira Mc Intosh was in good form Saturday. She blazed to a 7.11 to win the 55-meter dash, tying the state record set last year at this meet by Blue Wave senior Royal Cheatham.

Cheatham watched Mc Intosh, and cheered all the way. “I’m not surprised,’’ Cheatham said of Mc Intosh’s time. “This is a tough athlete. She’s been improving every day at practice.’’ If that wasn’t enough, Mc Intosh came back to the track and broke the R.I. state record for 300 meters. The Hope flash clocked 39:38, eliminating the ‘12 mark of 39.92, set by East Greenwich’s Jaimee Dorsey.

“Tiring,’’ Mc Intosh smiled, when asked about her two wins. “I didn’t get out too fast [in the 300], but I finished strong.’’

For the fourth straight year, Erica Johnson, of Bay View, claimed victory in the 600 meters. She made it a “four-peat’’ on Saturday with her time of 1:34.49. Only Chariho High All-Stater Mary Serdakowski won four state hurdles races from 1999 to ‘02.
Maria Bolibruch defended her state 55 hurdles title by clocking 8.41 for the win. It was Pilgrim junior Becca O’Donnell in the winner’s circle of the long jump. She leapt 17-10 (5.43). Tori Ebert also won her second straight shot put title (39-1.75/11.93). And in the 20-pound weight throw, it was Classical’s Martha Cooper with a 56-foot throw (17.06).

BOYS: Ionata pops a winning throw
Charlie Ionata, the Barrington senior who has been among the top 10 weight throwers nationally all season, won that event on Saturday with a toss of 75-4.75 (22.98). Coventry High senior Aaron Comery defended his state shot crown with a put of 54-11.75 (16.75).

The boys’ league this season has been loaded in distance events. Two standout runners - Cumberland’s Trevor Crawley and Chariho’s Bryce Kelley - went at it on Saturday in the 1500 meters. In the end, it was Kelley clocking in at 4:01.39 (a PCTA mark). The Clippers’ Crawley finished second in 4:10.22.

“I wanted to go out a lot faster,’’ said Kelley, the state record-holder for 800 meters. “I’m not happy. I just didn’t have it.’’

Earlier, Crawley went 8:47.95 to win the 3000 over Hendricken’s Colin Tierney (8:49.30). “I was hoping for the low 8:30s,’’ the Cumberland senior said.
East Greenwich senior Ben Fazio battled La Salle’s Jack Salsbury and the Eagles’ Tom Barry for supremacy in the 1000. Fazio hit the tape first in 2:35.13, to Salsbury’s 2:35.55. Barry placed third in 2:35.58.
