Alva Hicks sets new state record in the 3k hammer at the Kof C Relays

Adam Kelly and Charlie Ionata, both of Barrington High, won a pair of boys’ hammer events as part of Saturday’s Knights of Columbus Relays at Conley Stadium. Classical High sophomore Alva Hicks, meanwhile, established a Rhode Island record for the girls’ 3-kilo (7-pound) hammer. Hicks threw the ball 169 feet/51.33 meters. (The girls use a 4-kilo (9-pound) implement in RIIL competition).
Ionata, a senior, took the 6-kilo (13-pound) hammer event with a toss of 211-6 (64.46). Sophomore Kelly, meanwhile, won the 5-kilo (11-pound) hammer with a throw of 204-6 (62.33). In the boys’ 16-pound (international weight) hammer, it was Central High senior Clarence Gallop with a mark of 167-1 (50.93).
