Cooper opens Outdoor season Athlete of the week on Mile split

M-F Athletic Athlete of the Week

M-F Athletic: Male and Female Athletes of the Week (April 1-8)

MileSplit RI would like to congratulate Barrington senior Charlie Ionata and Classical senior Marthaline Cooper, who have been selected as our inaugural male and female Athlete of the Week, one of our newest features that's sponsored by M-F Athletic.

Each and every week during the outdoor, cross-country and indoor track season we will be selecting a male and female Athlete of the Week.  The feature will run on our site, beginning on Tuesday of the following week. For the week of April 1-8, Cooper and Ionata are our deserving recipients. Both earn the honor for their performances in the weight events.

In Barrington's league-opener against Middletown and St. Raphael Academy on April 2, Ionata captured three events by winning the shot put with a heave of 44 feet, 6.5 inches, the discus with a distance of 140-3 and the javelin with a toss of 138-6. Ionata saved his best for last on Saturday at the 45th annual Knights of Columbus Relays where the indoor state champion and All-American in the 25-pound weight copped the hammer with a distance of 222-4. His effort was not only a six-foot personal best but established a school record.

Cooper has also not missed a beat from the indoor season where the Classical star won the state title in the 20-pound weight and was a fourth-place finisher at the New Balance National Indoor Championship. In a dual meet with La Salle Academy and Warwick on Friday, she tossed the hammer a PB of 158-7. Under unfavorable conditions with heavy winds and the temperature in the mid-30s, Cooper went home with the championship plaque at the Knights of Columbus Relays with a gold-metal effort of 146-2 to defeat Narragansett’s outstanding junior Leia Mistowski by a little more than a foot.
