R.I. Track & Field Foundation Correspondent
14 Jan. - - Today’s inaugural East Coast Championships proved to be a first-class affair, thus promising a regular niche in the winter track calander. The meet, held at the PCTA facility in Providence, contained a number of standout performances, including the obliteration of one state record, and the equaling of another.
Woonsocket’s Kaylnn Pitts was “The Obliterator’’.
In the girls’ triple jump, Pitts, a junior, outdid herself three times over, and as many times smashed the R.I. indoor mark previously held by three jumpers. Pitts, who also excells in the high jump, popped her first record-breaking jump when she traversed 38 feet, 1 inch (11.60 meters). That mark alone was good enough to send packing the state record of 36-11 (11.25), which was first set in 2000 by Classical’s Tolu Fayanjuola, then equaled in ‘09 (La Salle’s Britt Powers), and ‘10 (Smithfield’s Kim Ezeama).
But the Novan flash asn’t done yet. On her next attempt Pitts leapt 38-6 (11.73), finally getting off a winning distance of 39 feet, ½ inch (11.89). For Pitts, the mark was a personal-best in an event that is not contested by the Interscholastic League.
“I [train] doing run-throughs indoors, in our gym,’’ said Pitts, who last spring won the state outdoor triple jump crown, and was third in New England. “[Triple jump] is my favorite, by far,’’ she added. Pitts was named the meet’s Jumps MVP for the girls.
Pitts’ day also saw her battle La Salle’s Dakota Dailey-Harris in the high jump. Pitts went out at 5-6 (1.68) finishing second. Dailey-Harris took the event at a height of 5-8 (1.72), which tied her recently-minted indoor standard.
In the boys’ high jump event, Central Falls senior Steve Vazquez soared 6-6 (1.98) to take top prize, and the meet’s Jumps MVP. He went out in three tries at 6-8 (2.03).
Vazquez, a two-time indoor high jump champ,  owns a P-R of 6-10 (2.08). Like the Rams’ Dailey-Harris on the girls’ side, Vazquez also combines basketball with a track field event. “It helps with enrurance,’’ he said. “I’ve got my steps down pretty good, and I love the spotlight of the event.’’
Classical’s Joe Velez, currently the nation’s top prep athlete in the 25-pound weight throw, won that event today. Velez tossed the ball 73 feet, ¼ inch (22.25 meters). West Warwick’s talented senior Eddy Uthmann went 21-9 ½ (6.64) in taking the boys’ long jump event. The boys’ pole vault - another event arcane to State Meet competition, was a thriller, thanks to Portsmouth’s Nick Tyler. The Patriot senior cleared 13 feet, 6 inches (4.11) to easily win the event. The boys’ two-mile was won by Victor Ricci, of The Prout School, in a time of 10:02.57 (9:17.9 at 3000 meters).
Classical’s “Do-All Kid’’ - sophomore Maddy Berkson - was her usual busy self today. She won the 800 meters in 2:22.04, clocked 58.72 to capture the 400 and ran a leg on the Purple’s winning 4x400 relay.
Royal Cheatham, Hope’s senior superstar, went 18-11 ¼ (5.77) to take the girls’ long jump by better than a foot. She also anchored the Blue Wave’s winning 4x200. Paige Ethier, South Kingstown’s top distance runner, clocked 5:16.23 to win the girls’ mile. The girls’ two-mile was an early battle between North Kingstown junior Aisha Mc Adams and Julie Mc Conville, a junior from Hingham (Mass.) High. Mc Conville pulled ahead with six laps to go in the race, and won in 11:08.74. Mc Adams, the state indoor record-holder in the two-mile (10:42.36), placed second in 11:20.19.
Oval Notes: The meet featured teams from Massachusetts, as well as in-state squads . . . The annual Yale Invitational goes off next weekend at the Coxe Cage in New Haven.
