Marthaline Cooper opens big in first college meet
Winthrop Has Five Other Top Three Finishes

BETHLEHEM, PA - Freshman Marthaline Cooper opened her collegiate career on a high note by capturing first place in the women's weight throw at the Angry Birds Invitational held on Saturday at Lehigh University.
The Providence, RI native won with a distance of 17.39 meters, the second longest in Winthrop history and only 26 centimeters short of the school record.
"Martha came in with high expectations and she delivered with a lifetime best in her first college meet," said Brett Best, Winthrop's throws coach.
Cooper highlighted a day full of strong performances and top-three finishes by the Eagles.
Colby Coulter placed second in the 3000 meter run with a personal best time of 8:44.90. In the long sprints, Alesha Love captured third place in the 400 meters with a time of 1:00.85, while Chris White also finished third in the 200 meters with a clocking of 23.55 seconds. In the mile run, Shayna Jenkins took third place in a time of 5:20.49. Jakeb Elliot claimed third place in the men's weight throw with a mark of 16.59 meters.
Seven more Winthrop athletes came up just short of top three finishes. Here is the list of fourth place finishers: Shaniqua Hunter (Weight Throw), Tristan Langley (5000m),Shalace Rose (400m dash), Carlo Raiteri (60m dash), Deshaun Squires (200m dash), Jeanne Stroud (3000m) and Shaniqua Hunter (Shot Put).
