A few slices of pizza and a whole lot of talent is all it took.
Two weeks after coming a mere 2.5 inches from a state mark in the weight throwers relay, the Classical High girls got it all right on Friday. With a combined distance of 152 feet, 11 inches, the trio of Cheyenne Figueroa, Sarah Ortes and Serena Lalli established a new state record at the annual Rhode Island Classic. For Figueroa, it was twice as nice. The gifted senior not only improved on her nation-leading toss with an all-time best of 62-8, she also broke the school mark of 62-2 by former Classical great and two-time national champion Victoria Flowers from the RI State Meet in 2007.
The Purple were able to get the record right from the beginning, something it fell just shy of at the Injury Fund Relay Carnival on Dec. 13.
"The first important thing was just to get a mark, be safe and then after we could go crazy," said Figueroa. "Immediately on our first tries, we broke it. We broke it by 15 feet."
Prior to the competition, the winning team was given a little motivation from head coach Bob Palazzo.
"He said I'll get you pizza if you break the record," Figueroa laughed. "We were kind of a little hungry."?
