5 Jan. - - (MEDIA NOTE) Correction on Berkson’s winning time.
It’s clear by now that Maddy Berkson likes the banked oval at the Armory Track in upper Manhattan, New York. On Saturday, the Classical High senior captured the Hispanic Games 3000 meters in a new Rhode Island state-record time of 9 minutes, 49.35 seconds. Berkson bettered her own record performance of 9:53.34, which she clocked a year ago at the Yale Invitational. Berkson’s two other indoor records (the 400 and 800 meters) were run on the Armory track.
Berkson’s performance on Saturday was not just record-breaking, but definitive. She beat the second-place Denise Branch, of Benjamin Cardozo High in Queens, N.Y., by 12 seconds. Branch’s time was 9:57.97.
“The whole field went out really fast,’’ the Stanford University-bound runner said. “I slowly worked my way up. I was in second or third [at 1500 meters]. My race plan was to hit even splits.’’
The Hispanic Games mark Berkson’s first out-of-state appearance this indoor season.
