7 July - - Barrington High grad and Wake Forest University incoming sophomore Charlie Ionata captured the men’s hammer event on Sunday at the USATF Junior Outdoor National Championships, held at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon in Eugene.
Ionata, the 2013 R.I. State Meet hammer titlist, threw the ball 222 feet, 1 inch (67.70 meters). Placing second, and one inch behind Ionata, was 2013 Central High grad Clarence Gallop (222-0/67.66). Gallop finished his freshman year at Charleston Southern. University of Rhode Island incoming sophomore, and South Kingstown High graduate, Mahlik Handley finished fourth in the competition, while Barrington High incoming senior Adam Kelly came in fifth.
State Meet champ and Throws MVP Alva Hicks placed 11th in the women’s hammer event. Stanford University-bound Maddy Berkson finished ninth in the preliminary heat of the women’s 800-meters; her time was 2:10.79, one spot out of qualifying for the finals.
