ROCK HILL, SC--Winthrop freshman hammer throw athlete Marthaline Cooper captured the women's hammer throw and earned All-Big South Conference honors to highlight the opening day of the 2014 Big South Track and Field Championships that will continue on Friday and Saturday at the Irwin Belk Track Complex.

Cooper (Providence, RI), came into the championships as the top-ranked hammer throw performer and was up to the challenge as she claimed the title with a toss of 53.58 meters (176-01 ft.).  Junior Cynthia Gordon also earned All-BSC honors in the hammer as she placed third with a throw of 50.05m (165-02).

Senior distance runner Jeanne Stroud, the defending 10,000 meter champion and one of the pre-race favorites  to win the title, finished fourth.  She still has a chance to defend her 5,000 meter title on Saturday at 3:45 p.m.

The Liberty men are No. 1, while the Coastal Carolina women lead after the first day of the championships.  Charleston Southern is currently second with 22 points, while Gardner-Webb is third with 22 points.  Coastal Carolina sits in fourth with 17 points and in fifth is High Point with 14 points.  Campbell's 11 points is good for the sixth position as UNC Asheville (2 points) and Winthrop (2 points) round out the list of teams that scored on Thursday.

In second for the women is Winthrop with 22 points, followed by Liberty with 21 while Campbell was fourth with 11 points.  High Point is fifth with 10 points and in sixth is UNC Asheville with 6 points.  Winthrop rounds out the teams that scored today with five points.

In the first final of the day, the men's hammer throw, All-American Alex Young of Gardner-Webb placed first with a mark of 196' 5.0".  Clarence Gallop of Charleston Southern took the silver with a throw of 194' 3.0".  Nathan Padfield of Gardner-Webb rounded out the All-Conference performers in the event with a throw of 190' 8.0".

The men's long jump finished with All-American Braxton Drummond from Charleston Southern in first-place with a distance of 25' 1.25".  Liberty's Kenny Scott took the silver medal with a jump of 23' 10".  Reggie Nelson of Coastal Carolina came in third as he went 23' 4.75".

Latesha Simpson of Coastal Carolina claimed the Big South Championship in the long jump with a distance of 18' 7.25".  Campbell's Lilla Juhasz finished in second-place with a jump of 18' 6.50". Liberty's Oasis Hernandez's mark of 18' 3.75" was good for the bronze medal in the event.

The women's 10K finished with Letitia Saayman on top as she crossed the line in 35:50.14.  Jacy Christiansen of Liberty finished second as she turned in a time of 36:24.50.  Julia Zautcke of High Point finished third in the event with a time of 36:59.70.

Campbell's Amon Terer set the Big South meet standard in the 10K as he broke the tape in 29:51.19.  Liberty's Josh MacDonald also finished under the previous meet record as he clocked in at 30:12.89.  High Point's Jeff LaCoste finished up the All-Conference athletes in the event with a time of 30:29.50.

Half way through the heptathlon, Liberty's Riley Brandon is leading the way with 2,832 points.  Olivia Moody of Gardner-Webb is second with 2,738.  Erika Jackson of Liberty rounds out the top three in the event with 2,630 points.

Through five events in the decathlon, VMI's Quincy Murphy is currently first with 3,449 points.  Zach Davis of Liberty sits in second with 3,401 points.  Gardner-Webb's Ben Bell finishes up the top three in the event with 3,375 points.

Day two of the 2014 Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships presented will start on Friday, April 18 at 10:00 a.m.
