14 Oct. - - Alicia Holloway is a track kid, through and through. The Classical High senior has been a consistent scorer in middle distances, and ran a leg on her school’s second-place 4x400 relay at last winter’s State Meet. That final event ended with Classical sharing state championship honors with La Salle.
Nowadays, Holloway is out on the cross country circuit as a member of the Purple squad. On Monday at the annual City of Providence Columbus Day cross country invitational at Roger Williams Park, Holloway made the best of her distance training by winning the Varsity Girls’ 2.8-miler. She finished the hilly park route in 19 minutes, 44 seconds, one second in front of Hope’s No. 1 runner, junior Nathalie Rosado.
In the boys’ Varsity run, it was Barrington High freshman Mars Bishop posting a winning time of 15:59. His teammate, junior Lucas Bledsoe, was a second off the pace - hitting the line in an even 16 minutes.
‘It [cross country] keeps me in shape,’’ said Classical’s Holloway, a senior. “This is a way to develop my form. [Today] I visualized the course, how I’d run the race.’’
Bishop has already enjoyed success as a harrier in his debut, having posted good performances at the Ocean State and Thetford (Vermont) Invitationals. On Monday, he led a strong Barrington contingent, in which seven Eagle runners placed in the top ten.
“A lot of people went out fast,’’ said the rangy Bishop, who will play basketball this winter before running outdoor track (800, 1500). “The course is a good one, fast. My goal is to get under 17 minutes.’’
